WHERE AM I AND WHAT AM I DOING?
“Hey Kaine, how are you? Wait…where are you?”
It always makes me smile to hear this because I feel like an adventurer; bouncing around the world, exploring fascinating places, and learning strange an interesting things. It means I am living an intrepid life, which is exactly the dream I had when I started this experience. It means people care about where I am and what I have seen. Unfortunately it also means I should call my mother more often.
Of course I polish my answers as much as possible.
“I’m great. I’m in Berlin staying in this cool, little apartment in Charlottenburg.” This translates to “I’m not dead. Things are cool…as in cold. Winter is coming and Berlin isn’t known for its beautiful autumn climate. I’m currently wearing every piece of warm clothing I brought with me and sitting in front of the heater. I will soon realise I have no food in the fridge and it is Sunday, so all the supermarkets are closed.”
Travel bloggers love posting photos of their laptops in beautiful locations, with the caption “My office today!”. Usually it is at a bar, overlooking a beach with the sun streaming and sand underfoot. I have posted photos like this and tried to work in the same places. Then unable to stop myself I have helplessly ordered my first, second and then third beers while my writing descended into unintelligible rants about how travellers these days spend all their time on their phones and complaining about the upload speeds of the free museum Wifi.
I am currently in a more productive environment. I look out into the courtyard of an apartment building. The most interesting thing visible to me is the kitchen window of the opposite apartment. Occasionally, a leaf falls off the large tree or someone wanders down to the courtyard to sort their garbage into the eight different recycling bins. Do these people not have jobs?
I have been in Germany for close to seven weeks and it is time to move on, not because I want to, but because I have to or I will eventually breach my visa limits. I am leaving soon to go to Barcelona, Spain…well, Catalonia. Right now, I’m not sure what country it is in. I think it depends who you listen to, but perhaps I will keep my opinion to myself while I am there.
After Barcelona, I will be heading to Croatia for a couple of weeks and then to Rome! It will be my first visit to Roma and I cannot wait! I look forward to sharing all of my experiences with you as I get back to telling stories the way I want to!
I have a lot of writing to catch up on and I am really looking forward to it! Wherever you are, I hope you are doing what you love.
