MAKING PLANS AND BREAKING PLANS

Are you a planner? Do you have a folder of itineraries and booking references before even head to the airport? Here’s what I think of that…

WHY EVERYONE WHO CAN SHOULD TRAVEL

I love to travel. I also believe everyone should travel. Travel pushes you to do new things, to think about the world differently, and changes you in so many ways. It is impossible to travel and return the same person you left.

HOW TO MASTER YOUR TRAVEL FEARS

I will confidently state every person who has dreamed of throwing it all in and disappearing into the world has a moment where they question themselves and likely every decision they have made that led to this point. I would also confidently state, for the vast majority of dreamers, this is the moment their dreams sink and drown, weighed down by an anchor of excuses.

RESPECT….SERIOUSLY, RESPECT!

I get a little annoyed at the amount of people who will visit another country, yet refuse to learn about or respect their cultural differences. These are some of the most interesting parts of travelling, and it is how we learn and grow together.

GETTING CAUGHT OUT

I have flown on an plane a few times now. I have flown to different countries in far off corners of the world. If I go by one of the questionnaires on the internet, I could even call myself a seasoned traveller.

However I still get caught out.

I AM NOW A DIVER

My recent trip to the Philippines highlighted a rather sizeable gap in my skills for travelling the world and seeing all the things I wanted to see. I was not PADI certified.

At least, until today.

THE POST TRAVEL BLUES

I returned home from the Philippines very relaxed, extremely tanned, and ready for two things; a hot shower and the largest, juiciest steak I could find. That feeling stayed with me for a time as I shared my experience with every person who mistakenly asked how my holiday was, spent some time writing blog articles for those that didn’t ask about it, and uploaded photos for people who didn’t want to read about it. I was floating on the leftover ecstatic feeling of travel.

Then it all came crashing down around me.

TRAVELLING COMPANIONS: THE TRAVEL TEST

The hypothesis is simple: If I travel to a foreign country with someone, will I still be talking to them on the return flight or will I be hoping they caught a rare case of elephantiasis so some other body part will swell to match their fat stupid head?

AIRPORTS AND ASSHOLES

Your bags are packed. There is time for one last check. Wallet, phone, keys. Passport, documents, cash. House is locked. Everything is booked. One last look around, and you let the door swing closed behind you.

Take a deep breath. You are now at the mercy of the travel gods and must steel yourself to run the asshole gauntlet to your destination. Travel is a wondrous adventure filled with wondrous things, tempered slightly by a bunch of pricks.

WHY TRAVEL?

I am genuinely surprised when I meet a person who has no desire to travel.

I have met people who travel for reasons different to my own. I have to suppress the snarky gremlin in my head saying things like “Why did you fly to the other side of the world to sit by a pool and drink cheap cocktails? Isn’t that what you do every weekend anyway?”. Yet we still share the same fundamental wish to leave the norm behind and venture into the world.
